Is it possible to prevent hair loss?
Short answer: it depends.
The cause of your hair loss is a significant factor and will largely determine the most effective steps you can take.
By far, the most common type of hair loss is genetic, often referred to as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness.
While this hereditary type of hair loss is not preventable, most causes of hair loss can be stopped or treated. Taking proactive steps can make a difference in the progression of hair loss.

For some, medications can be effective in preventing further hair loss and may help regrow some of what you’ve lost. FDA cleared medications include the topical treatment, minoxidil (Rogaine), and a prescription pill, finasteride (Propecia). Finasteride, however, is only a treatment option for men.
For women, a medication called spironolactone (Aldactone) or other anti-androgen medications can be effective and are sometimes prescribed for female-pattern hair loss. Hormone replacement therapy may also be a treatment option for women who have reached menopause.
Low-Level Light Therapy
In some cases, low-level light therapy, or LLLT, can be an effective treatment option for helping to slow or stop further hair loss and promote hair growth in people with alopecia. The treatment works by stimulating cell growth and repair.
A hair transplant can be one of the most effective hair restoration treatments for men and may help prevent balding. In the procedure, your viable, healthy hair follicles are transplanted to the thinning, affected areas of the scalp, where, eventually, hair will begin to grow normally again.
Other than your genetics, hair loss can also be caused by environmental or lifestyle factors, such as certain drugs, infections, hormone disorders, or nutrition deficiencies. Physical stressors like sudden weight loss or pregnancy, and other physical or emotional shocks, can also lead to temporary hair loss.
The following tips may help you avoid preventable types of hair loss:
- Be aware of and avoid medications and supplements that could cause hair loss.
- Avoid high-heat styling tools, tight hairstyles and harsh chemical treatments, which can all leave hair follicles permanently damaged.
- Eat a healthy diet, rich in the vitamins and minerals that support healthy hair growth and nourishment. Consider supplements to make up for any nutritional deficiencies.
- Manage stress levels.
- Stop smoking, as it may prematurely age your hair cells, causing hair follicles to become brittle and easy to damage.
