The natural cycle of hair growth involves hair loss. Follicles grow new hairs, and old and weak ones fall away. While the process is natural, sometimes the extent of hair loss supersedes what is considered normal and calls for external intervention.

Hair loss can occur due to stress, lack of nutrition, hormonal imbalances, aging, and medical conditions such as alopecia. Extreme hair loss can result in visible thinning and balding, both of which warrant the search for a suitable treatment.

In the initial stages, natural remedies and topical treatments may help. These treatments work mainly to arrest and prevent hair fall.

However, in the advanced stages, more effective treatment options are required. Hair transplants are the traditional choice to restore hair loss, but with medical and technological advancement, a non-invasive non-surgical alternative has been created: Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT).

Low Level Laser Therapy for Hair Loss

Laser treatments are generally more commonly associated with hair removal than hair restoration. However, LLLT is a treatment that is set to change this. LLLT has previously shown promise in treating and healing wounds, as well as reducing inflation and pain by encouraging cell regeneration.

The effects of low level laser therapy were discovered on accident in 1964 by Professor Andre Mester, when a mouse grew hair after exposure to laser rays. There have been many advancements and progressions since, and we now have LLLT, an FDA-approved and effective way to achieve a full head of thick, natural, and lustrous hair.

The Procedure

Before your treatment session, it is essential to consult with Dr. Bapna to analyze the condition of your hair and decide the best line of treatment. If the treatment is deemed suitable for the patient, the sessions are scheduled as needed.

During LLLT, a device emits soft cold laser rays (laser diode) to target the affected areas of the scalp. The low intensity of the rays ensures that there are no burns or scars. The cool radiation stimulates blood circulation to the exposed areas.

The increased blood circulation stimulates the hair follicles to grow. It has been observed in many cases that the treatment can also resurrect and encourage growth in dormant hair follicles. This mechanism is quite effective in slowing down hair loss and stimulating the growth of new hair.

The treatment can be performed during a single session or a series of sessions. The length of the treatment depends upon the severity of the case.

The results of the treatment are seen in most patients in about 4-6 months as new hair starts to grow.

Benefits

• Laser therapy is a non-aggressive and less invasive treatment for hair loss compared to surgical transplants.

• The treatment does not interfere with routine activities, since no recovery or downtime is needed after or between sessions.

• LLLT gives the patient the chance to have a full head of natural hair without any post-surgical marks.
