Hair Restoration FAQ

The team at Ohio Facial Plastics is passionate about helping patients make informed decisions for their treatment. Here, we have provided answers to many FAQ that patients have when considering treatment for hair loss. If you have additional questions or would like to schedule a private consultation with Dr. Sumit Bapna to find out the best hair restoration treatment for your needs, please contact our office.

  • What Is A Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure to restore fuller hair. The treatment involves harvesting hair from the back and/or sides of the scalp (donor site) and transplanting it to areas that are thinning or bald on the front, top, or crown of the scalp (recipient site).

At Ohio Facial Plastics, we offer two effective types of hair transplant: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and automated Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) using NeoGraft. Once the healthy hair follicles are transplanted, the hair will continue to grow for a lifetime.

  • Am I A Candidate For Hair Transplant?

A board-certified facial plastic surgeon who specializes in hair restoration, such as Dr. Bapna, can best determine your candidacy for hair transplantation. We will consider factors such as the cause of your hair loss, your age, the amount of your donor supply, the severity of your hair loss, and your desired goals.

Typically, the best candidates for hair transplant procedures are men with male pattern baldness who also have an adequate and stable donor hair supply in the back of the scalp.

  • Is the Procedure Painful?

At Ohio Facial Plastics, we work hard to keep patients comfortable and relaxed throughout their entire hair transplant procedure. With the help of advanced local anesthetics, your hair transplant should be painless. Patients can rest, listen to music or watch TV for the duration of the surgery.

  • What Should I Expect After Surgery?

Immediately after surgery, small scabs will form on the scalp at the grafted site; however, they will disappear within 4 to 10 days. In about 2-4 weeks following your procedure, the grafted hair will shed. You can expect new hair growth to begin in 3-4 months, with continued growth of about a half an inch per month.

  • How Much Does Hair Transplantation Cost?

How much your procedure costs depends on your chosen hair transplant method as well as the number of grafts you need to fully address your hair loss concerns. Though the initial procedure cost of a hair transplant can be more expensive than other options, it can give you a long lasting solution with the most natural results. Contact our office to schedule a consultation for a more detailed cost estimate or to learn about our payment options.

  • What Causes Hair Loss?

The leading cause of hair loss for men and women is heredity. The common male pattern baldness is a result of the hormone dihydrotestesterone (DHT) and its impact on the shrinkage and eventual loss of hair loss around the front, crown and top of the scalp.

Other likely causes of hair loss include stress, diet, hormonal change, aging, illness and medications. Hair transplantation is an excellent solution to many types of permanent hair loss in male and female patients.

  • How Natural Will My Hair Restoration Results Be?

With today’s technology advancements and Dr. Bapna’s talented artistry and skill, your hair transplantation can be undetectable. The latest specialized techniques allow Dr. Bapna to carefully transplant each hair follicle into the scalp in a way that produces a natural hairline with growth pattern consistent with the rest of your hair.

  • How Long Does Hair Transplant Surgery Last?

An average hair transplantation procedure takes about 4-7 hours, but this depends on the number of grafts needed as well as the specific hair restoration method you choose. Typically, 500 graft session lasts 3 to 4 hours, while 2500 grafts can take up to 8 hours.

  • Will I Have Post Surgery Restrictions?

Your restrictions depend largely on the specific hair transplant method used in your case. In follicular unit extraction (using NeoGraft), there will be no stitches in your scalp. However, with the follicular unit transfer method (using thin strip harvest), patients have stitches or staples at the back of the head. These stitches are unnoticeable after surgery and easily covered by hair or a baseball cap.

Most patients can resume shampooing after 48 hours. Unless your work involves strenuous activity, you may be able to return to work the next day following NeoGraft and within 5 days after a thin strip harvest hair restoration. Dr. Bapna will discuss your individual post-op instructions with you in detail before you go home.

  • Will I Need To Do Any Maintenance Therapy?

Dr. Bapna can best recommend whether or not maintenance therapy is beneficial after your surgery. We may suggest that you take medications or receive low-level laser therapy for hair loss to help you keep the hair restoration results you have achieved.
